    Slump

Thursday, September 13, 2007, 08:36 PM EST [General]

Hey everyone In a horrible slump, any tips/ comments? Im averaging a mere 125 compared to my regular 170. I got a new ball a month or two ago and my slump has only lasted just 5 weeks now. The ball does not feel strange but it is a 16 pounder.

wow that is a pretty bad slump...umm the only thing that i do to get out of slumps is go back to the basics, and forget the last bad ball and think of a time you threw the ball well

    Dylan,

I've been going through a similar problem. I'm down 35-40 pins off last year's average. At this point, the slump is mostly mental, but you might want to work with a coach or your pro shop staffer if he/she is a coach and get a few pointers. The rest is all about not "over thinking", relaxing and just rolling the ball.

A good book to help with the mental game is Dean Hinitz's "Focus for Bowling". It's actually helpful.

Going back to the basics is probably the best advice that everyone has given you. If you do not have one, incorporate a pre-shot routine. Dry off the hand, pick up the ball, wipe off the ball, get set, take a deep breath, then go. You don't have to do exactly what I just said. Just do whatever you do the same way every time. It helps slow things down and gets you focused on the shot. If you make a bad shot, forget about it. It is now in the past and thinking about it will ruin your concentration.

Well basics are always good but ima 200 avg bowler..i havent always been..actually i was never a 200 avg bowler till last year...i was only 170-180 before last year...Reading ur shot and keeping consistant are prolly the 2 most important things anyone can do. Ive never looked at the arrows on the alley i just shot were i felt comfortable throwing it...its a comfort zone...i also chew gum wen i bowl..it calms my nerves..u should try it!
